Key Takeaways

  • Hungrybox was the Genesis X2 Melee Championship
  • This was his first Genesis win in six years
  • This was his first major Melee tournament win since Riptide 2022

Super Bowl Bros. Melee legend and Team Liquid member Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma has won the Melee Championship at Genesis X2. The win came over the weekend, and it ended his six-year drought.

Hungrybox last won Genesis in 2019.

This was also his first major win since Riptide 2022.

This win for Team Liquid comes after they recently signed five-time chess World Champion Magnus Carlsen

Hungrybox’s Massive Win

Following the win, Hungrybox was emotional, finally winning an event. He used Jugglypuff throughout, including against Alvaro “Trif” Garcia Moral in the Grand Final.

This win was also important as there have been some controversial esports guidelines from Nintendo regarding Smash.

Hungrybox and the other competitors played at Genesis X2 in San Jose, California.

Before making it to the Grand Final, Hungrybox had a tough match with Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett.

Wizzrobe has beaten Hungrybox plenty of times, including this time when he lost 3-0.

This was in the Winners Bracket, and Hungrybox was sent to Losers Bracket with the loss.

Hungrybox fought his way through and beat Joseph “Mang0” in the Finals Bracket.

Eventually, Hungrybox was facing Wizzrobe again but got the win.

After this win, he fell to his knees, pumped his fist, and shook Wizzrobe’s hand.

The Grand Final

As mentioned, Hungrybox met Trif in the Grand Finals.

Trif is known for playing Peach.

Hungrybox won two matches, both going 3-1. In the final match, Hungrybox is seen crying when he realizes he will win.

Mew2King and Hungrybox Comment

Another Melee legend, Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, who also streams, made a post about Hungrybox’s win on X.

“I put a lot of effort coaching @LiquidHbox so he could reach his dreams of winning majors and being #1 again and today he just won the biggest tourney of the year!!  I'm super happy for him and i love doing this stuff,” he wrote.

Hungrybox also took to X to discuss the win, writing:

“when the world tells you you’re past your prime when you feel like it’s over & when you feel like you can never touch the ceiling again there is always another chance that’s why you never f****** give up my first Supermajor win in almost 3 years I am your GX2 Champion.”

Hungrybox also later announced an event, the “Hungry Games,” a series of five online tournaments in which his prize money from Genesis X2 will be put into the pool.
