Death By Suicide
The police were alerted to the room at the resort at about 5 pm local time on Sunday. The guest in the room showed signs that he wanted to die by suicide, per reports.
SWAT and negotiation officers attempted to reason with the guest for several hours, but they refused to leave the room. He eventually opened the door while holding the LVMPD Cap. Kurt McKenzie said it was a shotgun.
Officers then urged the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and rushed the police. From there, an officer shot him.
EMTs arrived on the scene, but the man was declared dead at the hotel.
Had Additional Guns
In search of the man’s belongings, a second firearm was discovered.
Before police arrived, securtity guards tried to check on him, but he wouldn’t open the door. According to McKenzie, when security guards tried to enter the toom, they heard what sounded like “racking of a firearm and backed away” and then called police.
As mentioned, officers couldn’t get the man to open the door either.
As per LVMPD procedures, there will be an investigation as this involved an officer doing the shooting. The investigation will examine if deadly force was necessary.
No one else was injured in the event.
This marked the 16th officer-involved shooting in the LVMPD jurisdiction this year.
More details, including the name of the officer who did the shooting, will be revealed at some point this week.
The South Point Hotel is located near South Las Vegas Boulevard and West Silverado Ranch Boulevard in Las Vegas.
They released a statement after the shooting:
“South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa is fully cooperating with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).”
