According to court documents, the man who’s been accused of going on a deadly shooting spree at a bar in Hammond, Indiana, lost thousands of dollars hours prior at the nearby Horseshoe Hammond Casino.

In other casino crime news, a man at a Missouri casino is accused of holding an elderly woman at gunpoint and stealing money from her, along with her car.

Details About the Suspect

The alleged perpetrator is Caprice Cashaw, 31, of Merrillville, Indiana.

Cashaw was charged this past Tuesday with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder for the shooting at Portside Pub the Sunday before he was arrested.

Two people were killed, and three were injured.

While in the bar, Cashaw allegedly let off 20 shots outside the bar. The people killed were bartender Paul Olivares, 25, and patron Lorraine Reyna, 59.

After that, he allegedly went inside and fired another five rounds at people, per witnesses.

Cashaw’s Girlfriend Shot

During the incident, Cashaw’s girlfriend, who’s currently unnamed, was shot 10 times. She and another patron, a male, are in stable condition, though the injuries are serious. Additionally, a female patron was hurt but released from the hospital on Tuesday.

According to court records, Cashaw said to police that he “shot everyone at the Portside Pub.”

He Lost Money at the Casino

In talking to police, Cashaw shared that he lost about $7,000 at Horseshoe Hammond and blamed his girlfriend. Another witness said he had lost $10k.

According to court filings, Cashaw and his girlfriend left the casino around 3:10 a.m. They argued about the losses, and Cashaw was hitting her while they were driving.

Then, he stopped the car outside Portside Pub at about 3:30 a.m. and continued to assault her inside and outside the car for about six minutes.

When patrons and bar employees noticed what was happening, including Olivares and Reyna came out to intervene.

During this, Cashaw’s girlfriend ran from the car to the bar. Olivares asked customers inside to open the doors, and at some point, shots poured out.

Cashaw’s girlfriend made it inside but collapsed after being shot repeatedly in the back.

Cashaw then allegedly shot at Olivares, followed by Reyna’s back.

Olivares and Reyna were dead at the scene.

Cashaw will appear in court on April 9.
