The Woman Arrested
The caretaker is 56-year-old Yvonne Wroblewski. The police in Volusia County had been looking for her after the elderly couple reported that she had stolen the money.
According to an affidavit, the elderly couple stated that Wroblewski was given access to their finances to pay bills on their behalf but instead allegedly stole $100k.
It’s unclear what she did with the money, but she was arrested inside an illegal gambling outfit, so there could be speculation that it was for a gambling habit.
Florida’s Illegal Gambling Outfits
Outside of Miami-Dade and Broward County, Las Vegas-like slot machines are illegal in Florida. Even further, the slots can only be operated by facilities owned by the Seminole Tribe in these two countries.
In all, the Seminole Tribe owns six casinos.
One exception, though: The Miccosukee Tribe operates one slot-like electronic bingo facility.
Despite this, Florida has an issue with what is referred to as “internet cafes” or “arcades” popping up around the state.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Department referred to where Wroblewski was arrested as an internet cafe.
“In-home caretaker Yvonne Wroblewski has been arrested for the exploitation of a senior couple in DeLand. She gained their trust & took them for up to $100K. She was arrested at an internet cafe in DeLand this week after a deputy spotted her vehicle there,” the post on X read.
Florida Cracking Down
According to the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC), the site where Wroblewski was arrested is an illegal gambling outfit. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill earlier this year to allow law enforcement to seize machines found at these locations as state property to assist with this issue.
Wroblewski has been charged with grand theft, exploitation of the elderly, and fraudulent use of personal identification.
As of Thursday afternoon, she was in Volusia County Jail and on $60k bail.
