Key Takeaways

  • A federal court dismissed a lawsuit against Resorts World Las Vegas and former executive Scott Sibella
  • The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it can never be filed again
  • The plaintiff, Robert Cipriani, alleged that the casino management had players harass him after he reported there were criminals gambling there

A federal court dismissed a lawsuit against Resorts World Las Vegas, a casino on the Las Vegas Strip, and former top executive Scott Sibella.

Judge Miranda M. Du was responsible for the dismissal. It was done with prejudice, meaning Cipriani cannot file the suit again.

This came after Resorts World Las Vegas was under investigation following the incident involving illegal bookmaker Mathew Bowyer working with Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, regarding sports betting. Bowyer would do some business while gambling at the location.

What The Lawsuit Was For

Robert “R.J.” Cipriani, also known under his gambling moniker RobinHood702, filed the lawsuit.

Mr. Cipriani accused Resorts Las Vegas of several things, including civil conspiracy, negligence, intention infliction of emotional distress, and more.

In his lawsuit, Cipriani alleged that the casino management knowingly allowed criminals to gamble there and, after reporting it, was harassed and intimidated by another player.

One Alleged Specific Incident

Cipriani recounted one alleged incident that happened on Nov. 19, 2021. He said that he took another player’s cell phone because he was frustrated about being recorded by them. He was charged with robbery and larceny.

The charges were later dismissed.

That same day, he faced allegations from state regulators about back betting while playing blackjack.

The Judges Official Ruling

As mentioned, the lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice.

In her decision, Judge Du said that Cipriani didn’t provide sufficient evidence to link the casino or Sibella to the harassment.

“Said otherwise, it is not as if the Court merely found some factual allegations lacking, but the existing allegations suggest there are other facts out there that would make Cipriani’s claims plausible,” Du wrote.

Sibella’s lawyer, John Spilotro, also said, “That lawsuit never left the starting grid. The court saw it for what it was.”
