The Man Who Pleaded Guilty
The 25-year-old man who pleaded guilty is named Shayne Sussman.
He pleaded guilty to three attempted murder counts in front of District Judge Susan Johnson.
There’s a bit of a caveat, though.
Sussman pleaded guilty under the Alford Doctrine, which means he acknowledges sufficient evidence against him but maintains his innocence.
He’ll be sentenced on November 26 and will face up to 20 years in prison.
Here’s What Happened
The incident occurred on August 3.
According to prosecutors, Sussman managed to stab one casino worker in the back, lungs, collarbone, and neck.
The other worker stabbed by Sussman was a supervisor.
After these stabbings, he went into the casino and sat outside of a restaurant on campus.
He was approached by security guards, and he lunged at them, attempting to run away.
Then, a security guard managed to shoot Sussman in the abdomen, wounding him.
He was then sent to University Medical Center for treatment. The employees were also sent there.
Everyone survived.
During the incident, guests at the casino were under the tables.
Sussman Was Inebriated
Before this incident unfolded, Sussman was drinking during a concert that was taking place at the casino.
According to criminal defense attorney Thomas Ericsson, Sussman was “so plastered that he clearly loses control of his mind.”
“He will not be eligible for probation under our agreement,” Ericsson informed the Judge.
In all, he was hit with three attempted murder charges, four counts of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and one count of battery with the use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm.
There were other charges, but they were dropped before his plea under the Alford Doctrine.
