The Suspect Revealed
After being shot by the victim’s son, the suspect was identified as Khabir Shepard. He allegedly pointed a handgun at the woman and forced his way into her home at around 1 am.
During the home invasion, Shepard pushed the woman to the floor and took her purse from the dining room table, according to police.
The Son Was Alerted
As the home invasion was in progress, the woman called out for help from her son.
“The victim screamed for help from her adult son, who was asleep in a rear bedroom,” local police said.
The son awoke and rushed to assist his mother.
“The victim’s son retrieved his legally owned firearm and ran to his mother’s aid. The victim’s son observed Shepard’s firearm and fearing for his mother’s life, fired two shots at Shepard,” the police statement read.
Shepard was hit in the back and arm, and while he managed to escape the home, he collapsed on the front lawn, police said.
The victims called the Abington Township Police Department, who were quickly dispatched to the residence.
Suspect Brought to Hospital
Shepard was placed in police custody and then brought to the hospital to treat his wounds.
He was released from the hospital and hit with several charges, including burglary, carrying a firearm without a license, aggravated assault, and robbery.
The gun he allegedly used was found at this scene.
Shepard was arraigned in court earlier this week, and as of Wednesday, Sept. 25, he remains in custody at the Montgomery Country Correctional Facility. Bail was set at $250k.
Shepard has yet to enter any pleas on any of the charges.
It’s unclear how much the victim won at the casino and how much the robber attempted to take. Police didn’t reveal details of the victims.
The woman nor her son were injured in the incident.
