States Losing Out on Tax Revenue

This is a chief reason why Mississippi is currently considering a bill to ban the sweepstakes industry. The state is attempting to legalize online sports betting but is also looking to classify free-to-play platforms as illegal operators. This would maximize the tax revenue, keeping the state and regulated operators happy.
Are More Regulations Needed?
It seems unlikely that the sweepstakes industry will survive in its current form. That may make increased regulations the only possible way to continue. If these operators are forced to follow rules similar to those of the regulated gambling industry, it could allow them to continue to operate in legal markets.
While this may seem like a simple solution, sweepstakes platforms may be unable to adjust. The lack of real-money wagers means their pockets aren’t deep, and increased rules around marketing and other areas may make it impossible to compete.
