Key Takeaways

  • FanDuel’s handle and tax revenue was higher than the other three operators combined
  • DC expanded its market from one to four operators in July
  • Fanatics launched in the District last week

The August numbers for Washington, D.C.’s sports betting industry are in, and they are great news for FanDuel.

The industry-leading sportsbook dominated the market last month, posting a handle of $21 million and $550,350 in tax revenue for the District. Those numbers exceed the combined totals for the market’s other three online sportsbooks.

August was the first month that more than one sports betting operator was live in the District, showing us how the market share will break down.

FanDuel Shrugs Off Expanded Market

While FanDuel dominates most sports betting markets in the US, its results in the District will be extra sweet.

August’s numbers give FanDuel a big win after a perceived betrayal by the District’s city council earlier this summer. After years of having only one online sportsbook, the District voted to create more operating licenses.

The problem was that FanDuel had agreed to take over the market just two months before expansion plans were implemented. Representatives from the sports betting giant called out the Council for misleading the company into taking over the failing market, leading to a significant investment.

The move to bring in three of FanDuel’s biggest competitors was seen as a slap in the face, but it hasn’t prevented the sportsbook from thriving.

Head Start Boosts Fuels FanDuel’s August Results

While FanDuel took exception to the expansion of the District’s market, they did get a massive edge by being the sole operator for two months. The operator took over for embattled GameBetDC, which had run a sub-par online sportsbook since the market launched in the District. Bettors in the market were fed up with the GameBetDC platform, leading to monthly handles falling well below projections.

The District agreed to a deal with FanDuel to take over, and the market was revived. Disgruntled bettors now had the top sportsbook in the US at their fingertips, bringing back customers that had left during GameBetDC’s era.

According to the numbers from August, bettors are sticking with the sportsbook they already know.

Fanatics Sportsbook Joins the Fray

The District’s expansion of its sports betting market has happened quickly, and it is about to get even more crowded.

Fanatics Sportsbook launched on September 12 after reaching a deal to partner with the Washington Spirit. The operator has one of the newest platforms in the industry and has been aggressively adding markets since going live. While they haven’t been able to compete with the likes of FanDuel, they have spared no expense in attempting to close the gap.
