Key Takeaways

  • Maryland had a sports betting handle of $532 million for September
  • Tax revenue for the month was almost triple the amount from September 2023
  • FanDuel has led all operators in the market since its launch

The Free State’s sports betting market is turning some heads.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has reported a handle of over $532 million for September. That set a new record for the state and led to the tax revenue being almost three times as much compared to September 2023.

The strong September generated over $9 million in tax revenue for the state.

New Record Set Despite Fewer Sportsbooks

What made Maryland’s numbers most impressive is they have lost two sportsbooks this year. One was Betfred Sportsbook, which operated an online platform and retail location in the state. The operator announced its exit over the summer, citing an inability to capture enough market share.

Betfred’s exit still leaves Maryland bettors with plenty of options to wager on sports. The market still has a total of 11 online sportsbooks as well as 12 retail locations across the state.

FanDuel Continues to Lead the Market

Unsurprisingly, FanDuel once again dominated the Maryland sports betting market in September. The operator had a handle of $231 million for the month, far ahead of DraftKings’ total of $175 million. BetMGM is locked into third with a handle of $39 million, followed by Caesars and Fanatics at $22 million.

The market also gives us an example of ESPN Bet’s struggles to compete. The operators finished with a handle of $15 million in its full year in the market. The sportsbook continues to fall behind the likes of BetMGM, Caesars, and Fanatics in most markets, making it a third-tier operator despite the brand's massive popularity.

Good News for Maryland Education Fund

The majority of the tax revenue generated from sports betting in Maryland goes to the state’s education fund. Since the industry launched, it has generated around $94.7 million in tax revenue. That number will continue to skyrocket this fall as the NFL and college football seasons are underway, which the AGA predicts will bring record-setting numbers.

Most of the remaining funds are sent to Maryland’s problem gambling fund, which has received over $3 million.
