Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok Port is under evaluation as a potential IR location
  • Concerns about the legalization of gambling still linger
  • Gambling operators are already showing interest in the market

Thailand’s Ministry of Transport could bring massive changes to Bangkok’s waterfront with the approval of Bangkok Port as a potential site for an integrated resort (IR). Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit made the announcement on Friday and added that a committee was assessing the feasibility of developing such large-scale entertainment complexes at various sites, including ports.

Bangkok Port, also known as the Khlong Toei Terminal, is situated in the Thai capital on the Chao Phraya River. It runs under the Port Authority of Thailand and plays a significant role in Bangkok’s economy.

A Site with Considerable Promise

Bangkok Port’s strategic location along one of the city’s major waterways makes it an important maritime hub. The port also features a large harbor that can dock large vessels. These features make it an attractive candidate for an IR, boosted by its scenic views. Minister Suriya added that the area had the potential for a yacht marina.

While Bangkok Port stands out with its large size and waterfront access as a prime IR location, the Transport Ministry still has to conduct feasibility studies before making a final decision. A national committee will make similar decisions in regions like Pattaya and Laem Chabang.

Lingering Concerns

The Bangkok Port entertainment complex proposal comes amid a significant debate on legalizing gambling in Thailand. A recent study by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) involving 1,310 respondents revealed that 59% of participants were against the Entertainment Complex bill passing, and 69% opposed online gambling legalization.

The prominent academic Sangsit Piriyarangsan highlighted the government’s likelihood of failure to manage additional changes brought about by legal gambling. He argued that legalizing gambling in the current climate would promote illegal operations.

Sangsit also warned about the risks that come with legalizing online gambling. He argued that online platforms would make it challenging to enforce age restrictions, stating, “Casinos typically target adults, whereas online gambling seems easily accessible to younger people.”

Gaining International Attention

Even with public concerns, leaders like former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra insist that IRs will significantly propel Thailand’s economy. The government has noted that industry titans like Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Las Vegas Sands have expressed interest in entertainment complex licenses. Melco Resorts has already established an office in Bangkok, signaling global interest in the emerging market.
