There are three things that you need to learn before you play any poker variant.
The first is the high card, which is usually Ace. It means that Ace is the highest card in any streak and the most valuable card in the deck. For instance, a pair of aces will beat a pair of kings, and it’s possible to have a straight that goes from 10 to Ace but not from Jack to 2.
Secondly, you need to know how Poker hand values work. Thanks to step one, you know that a pair of aces beats a pair of kings, but does three of a kind beat two pairs, does a flush beat a straight?
Finally, you need to understand the betting order, which dictates when you bet, how much you bet, and at what point the hand is settled.
All of these things are quite simple when it comes to Casino Stud Poker. In fact, the first two are the same as they are for other popular Poker variants.
Check out the rules below for more information.
Casino Stud Poker Hands
In Casino Stud Poker, you will automatically receive a payout if your hand beats the dealer. You don’t need to work it out. However, it still helps to understand Poker hand rankings as they will give you something to play for and ensure you know how to read the game.

- Two Pairs:Â Two pairs of two cards that have the same value.
- One Pair:Â Two cards with the same face value.
- High Card:Â A high card is simply the highest card in the hand and is used to classify the value of the hand when there are no pairs or other valuable hands.
Casino Stud Poker Rules
To play a game of Casino Stud Poker, you need to make an ante bet. Once this bet has been made, both the player and the dealer will be dealt 5 cards. The player’s cards will be face-up to allow all contributing players to see. Only one of the dealer’s cards will be face-up.
The next step is to either fold or call. If you fold, the hand ends and you lose the ante. If you call, you will be charged a 2x stake and the hands will be revealed and compared.
The dealer needs to qualify before going any further. To qualify, they must have a hand that is at least king high. If they don’t have such a hand, the player’s call bet will be returned, and they will win 1x on their ante.
If the dealer qualifies, their hand is then compared to the player’s hand:
- Player loses =Â Ante and call bets are lost
- Player Wins = 1x win on the ante; call bet win is based on the payout table.
The side bets are optional and include:
- 5+1: A 5 card hand is formed from all 5 player cards and the dealer’s 1 face-up card. It pays according to the table.
- Jackpot:Â A progressive jackpot is triggered for a royal flush. Other payouts are available (see payout table).
